Dear Professor von Uhl,
My name is Gustavo Garcia-Flores. I am currently a first-year undergraduate student at CCNY, and I intend to major in Computer Engineering. As of now, my career goals are becoming a computer hardware engineer and one day starting my own tech company to invent something innovative to improve the lives of people. Currently, my short-term goals include completing the necessary academic requirements to enroll in the Grove School of Engineering and complete an internship in the engineering field to gain some experience working with computer hardware. For my long-term goals, I aim to graduate with my bachelor’s degree and start working at a tech company (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Meta) before funding my own company. To add on, I plan to pursue my master’s degree right after completing my bachelor’s if possible. I’m currently saving money in a savings fund to use for my future.
My experience with writing and reading started in high school. Since I was in my junior year of high school, I was taking the honors version of English. The class was mostly remote due to the pandemic, so I had to do most of the reading and writing on my own. By senior year of high school, I was taking a college level class called AP English Language & Composition. My English teacher taught me how to analyze a text and how to support an argument using sufficient evidence. While I was taking my FIQWS class last semester in the fall, I learned how to analyze my writing with rhetorical situation and be specific in what I was trying to covey in my writing. I hope to continue improving in this area and ways to apply these writing skills in the engineering field. Furthermore, I took a robotics class and join my high school’s robotics team as a senior. I learned how to work with hardware parts and think critically to solve a problem. I also got the chance to work with 3D printing and lasers when designing toys in a program called Makers for Change. I feel that I can apply these skills when I start taking college classes in my field of study.
So far as a college student, I am still working to build connections and join clubs that can help me thrive in my career ambitions. I’m also working on improving my leadership skills. Last semester in the fall I started my own Soccer Club at CCNY with the help of some friends. I’m currently serving as the club’s President and work with my E-board to organize events and soccer practices. I feel that by starting my own club at CCNY I can become a better team player in the workforce while learning how to solve real world problems. Additionally, I joined some clubs such as the Association for Computer Machinery (ACM) and the Latin American Engineers Association (LAESA-SHPE) to make connections in engineering and improve my tech skills.
My future career goals are becoming a computer hardware engineer and one day starting my own tech company. These goals will help me succeed in life because I will have a way to support myself, my family, and make a decent salary while doing what I enjoy which is working with tech machinery. These goals will support me in this class by pushing me to work harder, be a problem solver, and master the writing skills an engineer needs to be successful. Thank you for taking time to read my cover letter and have a great day!
Sincerely,
Gustavo Garcia-Flores
