Lab Report Rhetorical Analysis Self Refection Essay

For my rhetorical analysis, I was tasked to analysis three lab reports and evaluate which lab report was the strongest based on its components. The genre for my essay is rhetorical criticism. In my own lab report rhetorical analysis, the characteristics are it has an introduction where I provided a hook, background information, and stated the thesis for my essay, body paragraphs with evidence from each the three lab reports, and a conclusion where I restated my thesis and reflected on which lab report was the strongest based on the information presented. For me what motivated me in writing this essay was that I chose a topic that related to my major which is computer engineering.

The purpose for this assignment was to read three lab reports and analyze them thoroughly. In this assignment I hoped to successfully analyze the three lab reports in a field of study I enjoyed. For this essay my audience is my English professor and other people who might be interested in computer engineering. The rhetorical situation for my essay is I’m seeking the audience to understand which lab report is stronger based on the evidence that I provided. The relationship between me, my audience, and the medium is that I was able to write an essay that helps readers understand different views when working with hardware engineering.

This rhetorical analysis helped me achieve the course-learning outcomes. When writing this essay, I was able to acknowledge my own and others’ range of linguistic differences as resources and strengthen my source use practices. In this essay, I mostly paraphrased the evidence from the texts that I used. I also used some quoting when really necessary. Overall, I found this assignment to be challenging in the sense of figuring out which strategy I was going to use to complete this assignment. This assignment took some time to complete and required me to at some points reread the lab reports. I feel that next time it would be best to work on time management since it took a while to write this essay while incorporating some of the feedback I received during the online peer review session.

Technical Description Self Reflection Essay

For the technical description, I was tasked to choose a technological item and write about its components while including some history about the item. The item had to be something that could be described thoroughly but wasn’t too simple or too complicated. For my own specific technical description, I chose to analyze my own Swingline Stapler Optima 40. I gave a brief explanation of the historical context about the Stapler and the Swingline Company while also providing a description of each part that makes up a stapler. The genre for this assignment was technical writing. The characteristics for the technical description are title page, outline of contents, introduction with history and background information, body paragraphs discussing the parts and descriptions of the item, and conclusion explaining why the item is useful and why people should buy it. My motivation for writing this essay was being able to take something apart while being able to describe it with such detail since I like hands on work.

The purpose for this assignment was to choose an item and analyze it through the lens of an engineer while including images to describe the functions of the item’s parts. When completing this assignment, I hoped to take my Swingline Stapler apart while being able to describe the specific function of each part. The audience for this piece of writing is my English professor and other people who might be curious about the different components that makeup a stapler. The rhetorical situation is I’m trying to get the audience to understand how a Swingline Stapler functions. The relationship between me, my audience, and the medium is I was able to write a technical description that describes the different parts. At first, I struggled a bit since I had to order new screws to be able to take apart my stapler. Once I managed to solve that issue, I used a diagram of a stapler I found online to name each part and describe what its function was. I could have picked the basic model but since I owned a different model, I wanted to be unique and describe how this stapler model helps on a daily basis.

This technical description helped me achieve the course-learning outcomes. When writing this assignment, I develop and engaged in the collaborative and social aspects of writing. During the writing process I engaged in peer review which helped me structure how I would write my technical description and I received feedback on how to improve as a writer. I also strengthen my source use practices by paraphrasing evidence in my introduction when writing about the historical context of my item and I analyze each part of the stapler. Overall, this assignment was easier than the lab report rhetorical analysis I had done prior. It took some time to complete this assignment since I had to take apart my stapler and take pictures of each part.

Proposal/Presentation Self Refection Essay

For the proposal and presentation, I was tasked to work in a group to choose a need that presents an opportunity to propose a specific engineering innovation. My group had many ideas on what innovation to write about, but we eventually chose to focus on how to improve the NYC Subway. For our innovation we proposed adding a flywheel to the NYC Subway to help the MTA avoid spending too much money on electricity and to reuse wasted kinetic energy from the trains. This kinetic energy would be used to provided electrical power to subway stations and the trains as well. For this assignment, I was in charge of writing the summary and doing the calculations for the budget, labor force, time, and maintenance. Based on what I wrote, the genre for this assignment was technical writing. The characteristics for the proposal were press release, summary, introduction, proposed program, and innovation process. For the presentation it was somewhat similar to what we did in the proposal. I was motivated to work on this assignment since I got a chance to work in a group and feel what engineers do every day which is innovating new ideas to make our lives easier.

The purpose for this assignment was to identify a problem in NYC and proposed a solution to that problem using engineering. The audience for the proposal is my English professor, other engineers, and hopefully city officials like the Mayor. The rhetorical situation is I’m aiming to convince people about wasted kinetic energy in the subway and a possible way to recuse that energy to save money. The relationship between me, my audience, and the medium is my group was able to write a proposal that was descriptive, provided images and diagrams to support our idea, statistics, and analyzed possible options for our idea to take effect. For me personally, I would say we needed time to think of an idea but once we got that idea, we just moved on quickly to complete the tasks. This assignment was not too hard since I was working in a group and had support from my peers in case, I needed clarification.

This proposal and presentation helped me achieve some of the course-learning outcomes. While working on this assignment, I developed and engaged in the collaborative and social aspects of writing. During the writing process I worked in a group, and we divided the workload while checking on each other’s work to make sure we were on track. I also strengthen my source use practices by summarizing, analyzing, and citing my sources. Overall, I enjoyed this assignment since I got to work on a new idea that hopefully gets implemented in the near future.
